Let Him Go features Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as married couple George and Margaret Blackledge, whose son very unexpectedly passes away while out on a horse ride shortly after his son is born. A few short years later their daughter in law, Lorna begins dating again and decides to remarry and move their only grandson away to live with her new shady husband, Donnie Weboy, and his redneck family.
One day while out in town, Margaret sees Lorna, Donnie and little Jimmy eating ice cream. This scene warms Margarets heart momentarily until little Jimmy’s ice cream falls on the ground and Donnie mocks the young lad and then smacks Lorna. Soon after, they leave town with no real notice for the Blackledge’s. Immediately Margaret is beyond furious she comes up with a plan to track them down, free Lorna and little Jimmy of this abusive relationship and come back home with them. She’s going with or without her retire police officer husband.
On their journey, they reminisce on their lives together, dealing with grief and loss and in true Kevin Costner fashion, he comes off as incredibly uneasy during these exchanges. He’s one of those old school guys who keeps his feelings held in. No better person to play that role than Costner in my opinion. Once they get to their destination we even see a glimpse of George buying a small bottle of whiskey which clearly means something to them because it seems to me that he feels remorse over it and Margaret is less than enthused. There’s a story behind that we never really get to explore. The movies climax and conclusion was swift, violent and I thought really well acted and shot but perhaps it was a bit too swift.
All in all I think Let Him Go was a really entertaining film with some fantastic performances by Lane and Costner with Lane being the standout and really the focal and driving force of the story. I highly recommend Let Him Go to anyone looking for a new movie in this strange pandemic life we’re all living. It’s sure to keep you entertained from start to finish.
