Adam Sandler brings along his family in the sweet you com coming of age comedy, you are so not coming to my butt mitzvah.
Based on the book of the same name, it’s about a girl named Stacy Friedman who spent a great deal for surrounded by and attending Jewish celebrations of adolescents entering into adulthood, and she herself has big plans for her own epic bat mitzvah.
Her lifelong bestie, Lydia also shares in these larger-than-life celebrations, and they’re both determined to come hell or high water to help make this the best day for one another ever. One day after a series of events Stacy learns that Lydia also has a crush on the same boy. This sets the friends on a path that neither of them ever saw coming. Stacy struggles to come to grips with growing up and figuring out who she is and where she fits into this world.
Now when I said at the top, the Adam Center brought his whole family to this one, I mean that literally; His youngest daughter, Sonny, plays Stacy, his oldest daughter, Sadie, plays Stacy’s older sister Ronnie, and his wife, Jackie, even has a small role as Lydia’s mother.
The young cast worked really well together. Seems to me that they’re having the time of their lives on this film and why not? The standout for me was Sonny Sandler. You’ll have to pardon my pun here when I say, Sonny really shines as Stacy and I think this young actress has a bit of her old man in there. She just may have what it takes to work in comedy like Dad. I thought her timing was spot on and as the main character, I really liked her. It’s going be a lot of fun to watch to see where her career takes her.
All in all, You Are So NOT Invited to My Bat Mitzvah has a ton of heart and charm and plenty of laughs that can be enjoyed by both parents and the children together.
This is a perfect fit for a Friday night watch.
You Are So NOT Invited to my Bat Mitzvah arrives August 25th on Netflix.
