I’m a fan of puzzle games and I’m a fan of The Walking Dead so it should be a no brainer that I would be a fan of Bridge Constructor: The Walking Dead right?
Bridge Constructor is a physics-based puzzle game that involves putting together pieces of a bridge to get from point A to point B. You do this by building out the structure of your bridge using various materials like pivot points, wooden planks and other materials and testing it out. At times you’ll have multiple tasks to complete which involves building out a macro of sorts to move a character to one spot, waiting, pressing a button and moving to another location. Failure will become apparent quickly as you let your characters put things to test. You can then rewind them back to the previous point and then make adjustments. Success will see your characters safely get to their destination and sometimes even, my personal favorite event, the crushing death of a group of walkers.
The game will explicitly lay out to you what you need to do for each level. How you get there is up to you and where the challenge comes ion. Each level sets a goal with respect to how many resources you have at your disposal to complete the task ahead. You can set out to complete the task or for extra bonus points, you can complete the level under a pre-determined number.
The interface however, was a bit of an issue for me. I found it to be frustrating on the Xbox using the controller. It felt like I needed to be too precise for how the controller worked. I struggled to get the cursor exactly where I wanted it to be at times resulting in my failure. Luckily the rewind function doesn’t force you to start from scratch. I really had the impression that the game was developed for mobile devices and the console option was added as an afterthought and wasn’t really refined.
In the end, I quite enjoyed my time with Bridge Constructor: The Walking Dead. The cross-over just sort of works. Building the bridges was challenging and fun but would have been more enjoyable on a mobile device since the precision of the controller while not unusable was frustrating. Also to note is the price of the game is less on mobile devices than it is on consoles.
Pros:
Challenging puzzles
Killing walkers
Replay value is pretty good when you want to complete the extra challenges
Familiar cameos is always nice to see
Cons:
Control on the console was frustrating
Cheaper on mobile platforms
