Caligula was a movie of legend growing up. It was this forbidden fruit that myself and my friends had often spoken about in hushed whispers. A movie so controversial it was banned due to the sexual nature of the film. I don’t know where we heard about Caligula and the nature of this film but we all seemed to know something about it despite having never seen it. When I was offered the chance to review this film of legend, instantly I was intrigued and jumped at the opportunity.
I told my wife about it and we watched the 3ish hour movie. When all was said and done, we looked at one another and thought – it wasn’t that bad. Why was this so controversial? To us, it felt like we were sitting in a larger playhouse watching a play take place. To understand more, I did some research and as it turns out this is a VERY different version from what was release almost 50yrs ago. There is a lot to unpack there and I’m not the one to do that for you but there are some fantastic writers out there who have so I encourage you to check them out.
Now on to the review of what Caligula The Ultimate Cut.
From the outset, the film immerses you in the decadence of ancient Rome capturing its opulence and moral decay. Caligula never fully feels like a true film. To me it felt like I was watching a recording of a stage play but the sets and intricate costumes really brought the period to life. The performances, by Malcolm McDowell as Caligua and Helen Mirren, are bold, intense and provocative. It was a treat seeing these iconic actors in their earlier days.
This cut attempts to strike a balance between the explicit content that defined the original and a more coherent storyline. While it still pushes boundaries, it provides a clearer narrative arc that delves into the psychological aspects of Caligula’s reign. Fans of provocative cinema will appreciate the unflinching exploration of power, sexuality, and madness.
However, the film may not be for everyone. Its graphic depictions of violence and sexuality can be overwhelming, and the controversial themes may prove to be too much for some. Those seeking a straightforward historical account or a conventional narrative will likely come away disappointed.
Overall, “Caligula: The Ultimate Cut” is a bold artistic statement that invites viewers to confront the darker aspects of human nature. It’s a film that demands attention, sparking discussions long after the credits roll. If you can handle its audacity, it’s a visually stunning experience that offers a unique lens on a historical figure. I do think this movie holds value for film buffs and would recommend they check it out.
