It’s been announced that Microsoft is no longer making the Kinect and once inventory levels run out, as Porky Pig once said “That’s all folks”.
Introduced back in 2010 for Xbox 360 as a means of bringing motion controls to Xbox gamers in response to the success of Nintendo’s Wii. It brought a novel new means of controlling games mostly for more casual games and children. My daughter had plenty of fun with the handful of games we brought home for her but there were issues. We’d have to rearrange the living room to make it work properly.
As Microsoft announced the Xbox One – It was clear that Kinect was here to stay at least for the time being. It was positioned as being a pivotal component to the Xbox One experience with its improved camera, facial recognition, voice and motion controls. The backlash from many gamers was loud and extremely resistant to the technology with many early adopters even opting to not bother plugging it in.
Eventually Microsoft decided that they would make Kinect an optional device and they no longer included with the Xbox One consoles bringing us to today. Xbox Kinect is now officially Dead.
